Your Care Career Starts Here: Health and Social Care Courses in London

Do you want work that makes a real difference to people’s lives? A career in care could be for you, whether you are just starting out or already have some experience and want to take the next step.

ELATT has new health and social care courses in London for adults aged 19 and over. These are free, fully funded courses for eligible learners living in London. You don’t need experience or past qualifications to begin, and you study online with friendly tutors. If you already work or volunteer in care, you can turn that experience into a recognised qualification. New classes are opening soon.

Why Choose a Career in Health and Social Care?

Care work is about helping people live well, with dignity and independence. Every day, care workers support older people, adults with disabilities and people who need a little extra help at home or in their community.

It is a career where you can see the difference you make. It also suits many kinds of people. You might be starting out, changing careers, or coming back to work after time at home.

Which Health and Social Care Course Is Right for You?

We offer two courses, so you can start at the level that suits you. Both are taught live online in small, friendly groups. You will be assessed through written assignments and a portfolio of your work. There are no timed exams.

Level 1 Award: A Gentle Introduction

The NCFE CACHE Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care is a great first step. It is a great place to start if you want to learn about care and have no experience.

You will learn about:

  • The different jobs and places where care happens.
  • The values that guide good care.
  • How to communicate well with the people you support.
  • Keeping people safe (safeguarding), equality and diversity.
  • Health and safety basics.

There is no work placement at Level 1, and no experience is needed.

Level 2 Diploma: Get Ready for Work

You will go deeper into topics like duty of care, safeguarding adults, communication, record keeping and professional boundaries with the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Diploma in Care.

You will also complete a work placement of at least 100 hours in a care setting. This is where you build real confidence and gain the experience employers look for. Your ELATT tutor will support you along the way.

For Level 2, you need to be free to do the placement, and you need a DBS check (a standard background check for care work) before it starts. Not sure where to find a placement? Our team can give you guidance on finding a suitable care setting.

Who Can Join Our Courses?

Our courses are for adults aged 19 and over. You might be a good fit if you are:

  • New to care and want to explore the sector.
  • Already working or volunteering in care and want a recognised qualification.
  • Thinking about a career change into care or support work.
  • A parent, family carer or volunteer who wants formal knowledge.
  • Returning to learning after a break.
  • An ESOL learner ready to start vocational study.

If English is not your first language, you are very welcome. For Level 1, English at around Entry Level 3 is a good starting point. For Level 2, you need a basic level of written English (Level 1). Not sure about your level? Just talk to our team and we will help you find the right place to start.

You will also get extra support alongside your course, and you may study extra qualifications too, such as Functional Skills English and Maths.

Why Get a Qualification in Care?

A recognised qualification can take your care career further. Here is what you can gain with ELATT:

  • Show what you know: Our NCFE CACHE qualifications are nationally recognised, so they can help you stand out when you apply for jobs.
  • Build knowledge and confidence: You learn about safeguarding, communication, person-centred care and more, so you will be ready for care work.
  • Get real experience: At Level 2, you complete a placement of at least 100 hours in a care setting, with your tutor supporting you.
  • Open more doors: Your qualification can lead to roles such as care assistant or support worker, an Adult Care Worker Level 2 Apprenticeship, or further study.
  • Learn with support: Study online in small, friendly classes, with careers support alongside your course.
  • Cost does not have to hold you back: Our courses are funded for eligible learners.

If you are new to care: the Level 1 Award is a friendly way to find out what care work involves. You do not need any experience to join.

If you already have some experience: Maybe you work as a care assistant, look after a family member, or volunteer in your community, the Level 2 Diploma in Care helps you build on that and gain a qualification to show for it.

Whichever you choose, our team can help you find the right starting point.

Care Jobs You Could Do After Level 2

After the Level 2 Diploma, you can apply for entry-level roles in adult social care, such as:

  • Care Assistant
  • Support Worker
  • Home Care Worker
  • Community Support Worker
  • Day Centre Assistant

As a care assistant or support worker, you can earn up to £25,000 a year in London with experience. You can read more about the role in the National Careers Service care worker profile.

Where Could Your Care Career Go Next?

After Level 2, you could move on to:

  • Further study in health and social care.
  • An Adult Care Worker Level 2 Apprenticeship.
  • Specialist training, for example in dementia care or mental health support.

After Level 1, you can continue to the Level 2 Diploma at ELATT, start volunteering, or look for entry-level support roles under supervision.

Support to Help You Succeed

You will not be on your own. Our courses are part of ELATT’s Adult Study Programme, which gives you more than lessons.

You will have access to:

  • Careers and employability support: help with your CV, interview practice and one-to-one guidance.
  • Wellbeing support: workshops and support groups.
  • Extra subjects: you may also study Functional Skills English, Functional Skills Maths, Professional Development or Digital Skills. These are matched to you after a short skills assessment, so your programme fits what you need.

All of this is included at no extra cost.

How Are Our Courses Funded?

ELATT is a charity, and our courses are funded so that eligible learners do not pay course fees. A significant part of our funding comes through the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority’s Adult Skills Fund.

To get a funded place, you will generally need to be:

  • Aged 19 or over and living in London.
  • Legally resident in the UK.
  • Out of work, earning below the London Living Wage, or in one of several priority groups (for example, if you do not yet hold a qualification at Level 2 or Level 3, are disabled, are a refugee or asylum seeker, or are aged 50 or over).

Not sure if you are eligible? Our team will talk you through it.
