Overview

Build confidence in English for life and work — develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing from Entry Level to Level 2, online or at our centres.

At ELATT, we offer free English courses for adults in London, available online across the city and in person at our centres in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, and across West London. Whether you’re a complete beginner or want to improve your English for work or everyday life, our ESOL courses help you build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

We teach Entry Level to Level 2 ESOL classes, and every learner has access to conversation clubs, volunteering opportunities, and workshops on topics like wellbeing, community life, and employment support. Our courses go beyond grammar and vocabulary, they’re about helping you thrive in your local community and prepare for the future.

At the end of your course, you’ll sit for either an internal assessment (RARPA) exam or in-person external exam at one of our centres in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Ealing, White City, Heston, or Wembley — we’ll place you at the centre closest to where you live. (Please note: we do not offer online exams for external exams.)

  • Read and understand short texts such as leaflets, notices, and instructions
  • Write short paragraphs, emails, and messages clearly and accurately

  • Join conversation clubs and community activities to boost your confidence

  • Read and understand longer texts including job adverts, leaflets, and articles
  • Write detailed messages, application forms, emails, and personal letters
  • Use grammar, punctuation, and spelling more accurately
  • Practise speaking for real-life situations such as interviews, appointments, and community involvement
  • Learn about your rights and responsibilities as a UK resident, including an introduction to the UK’s political system
  • Understand money management strategies and know where to access advice on budgeting or financial challenges

  • No formal qualifications are needed. Entry Level ESOL courses are suitable for complete beginners and learners with limited English who want to improve their confidence for everyday life and basic work-related tasks.

  • Practise listening to real-world English, such as announcements, interviews, and podcasts
  • Speak more clearly and fluently in discussions, interviews, and presentations
  • Write longer, structured texts including letters, emails, and short essays
  • Apply for jobs in the UK, including writing CVs and completing applications for work placements
  • Plan events, make formal complaints, and understand consumer rights
  • Write personal statements and formal emails for education or employment
  • Understand your rights and responsibilities as a UK resident, including an introduction to the UK political system
  • Develop practical money management skills and know where to get financial advice
  • Take part in community activities, and if you choose, access support for volunteering or work placement opportunities

Entry Requirements

  • You should already have basic English skills and be able to hold longer conversations. This level is suitable for learners who want to gain more independence and prepare for further study, volunteering or employment.
