At ELATT, we believe in the power of inclusive education and community connection. Our Equal Voices project aims to bridge the gap between communities in different parts of London, fostering inclusivity, and empowering individuals through education, community organisation and community engagement.
Over the past year, our project has continued to grow as an opportunity for migrants across East and West London. From March 2024 to March 2025, we have witnessed transformative journeys, built stronger networks, and amplified the voices of those too often unheard.
As part of our commitment to holistic support, Equal Voices participants have accessed a wide range of services designed to promote language learning, integration, and personal development. These include:
These services work together to support the diverse needs of our ESOL learners, facilitating successful integration and long-term progression.
Our personalised enrolment and support model ensures that every learner has a clear path to progress. Each learner receives a one-to-one needs assessment, ensuring our support addresses their goals and circumstances.
With digital inclusion at our core, we provided devices and data support to 90 students, enabling full access to online learning. This practical assistance has removed barriers and opened doors for learners juggling work, childcare, or housing instability.
We recognise that true learning cannot happen without wellbeing. That’s why our Wellbeing Service – co-designed with students – offers group workshops, creative spaces, and holistic support. Delivered by trauma-informed staff with skills in counselling, mindfulness and art therapy, our sessions empower learners to thrive.
Students join activities supporting physical and mental health, confidence-building, and self-expression through the arts. The results speak for themselves: improved self-esteem, greater resilience, and a sense of belonging.
Over 50 Life Skills learners benefitted from tailored, one-to-one employability support. From building a CV and preparing for interviews, to exploring job-specific qualification routes, we’ve equipped students with the confidence and tools needed in today’s competitive job market.
Our October 2024 Job Fair connected over 150 learners with employers including Reed in Partnership and the NHS. This event, followed by targeted online workshops such as Routes into Teaching, provided a direct line to meaningful employment and further learning opportunities.
Through our new 3-step community organising toolkit, over 170 learners have engaged in meaningful action. From civic education to community campaigns, students are shaping their futures.
From Tower of London tours to litter-picking at Bunny Park, we use cultural exchange to build confidence and understanding. Students visited museums, engaged with their local environments, and took English learning beyond the classroom.
Workshops on protest history, creative placard-making, and field trips allowed students to see themselves as part of a wider story. These activities enrich the learning experience and foster lasting friendships.
Our learners are the heart of Equal Voices. Their journeys speak volumes about resilience, transformation, and the real impact of inclusive education. These stories show us that education is not only about qualifications, but about building confidence, reclaiming identity, and finding purpose in a new community.
Tahmina’s journey began with a fear of public transport and a deep sense of isolation. She described her early months in the UK as “totally terrifying.” Thanks to ESOL classes with childcare support, Tahmina reconnected with learning, made lasting friendships, and took on leadership roles within community organising campaigns. Today, she volunteers as a researcher for the #LoveESOL campaign.
Rita began as a volunteer in her ESOL class and also supported the Wellbeing Service’s Mindful Art Sessions. Her positive, can-do attitude quickly made her a vital part of the community. She now regularly joins online wellbeing sessions, where she shares her thoughts and continues to grow in confidence, leadership, and purpose—all while improving her English.
Khadija, a regular participant in our wellbeing workshops, overcame shyness and the challenges of speaking English as a second language. Inspired by a workshop leader who shared her own journey from ESOL student to published children’s book author and dance teacher, Khadija found renewed hope. Reflecting on a recent dance session, she shared:
“It was amazing. I’m not good at dance, but I tried to imitate her moves. She chose very beautiful songs which gave the opportunity to shake the whole body. I finally felt the energy of joy and power. It was something that came out of my body.”
We are scaling our support to meet rising demand for housing advice and financial guidance. With our expanded community partnerships and staff development, we’re embedding community organising even deeper into ESOL delivery.
Our mission continues: to ensure that every Londoner, no matter their background, can flourish. With the support of funders, partners, and our dedicated staff, Equal Voices is changing lives – one learner at a time.
