Course Overview

This course will teach you to design and develop professional-level websites for any purpose and function: from retail to entertainment or perhaps even your own new business! You will learn coding languages such as HTML and CSS alongside popular open-source CMS including the market-leading Joomla. Meanwhile gaining skills in Javascript, Jquery, SQL and PHP will all help you develop quality, interactive websites.

Web development combines creativity and analytical skills: it’s for the detail-orientated and those with an eye for design. Coding and developer skills are amongst the most in-demand in the IT sector at the moment, providing career opportunities in a wide range of exciting companies.

This course will equip you with the skills to become a web developer supported by expert advice from experienced industry professionals. We also support you with employability, including opportunities to speak to professionals and access mentoring, volunteering and work experience.

  • Cybersecurity: Learners will investigate the accidental and malicious security threats that exist to IT systems and data. They will learn about system vulnerabilities and the tools and techniques used to protect users from risks and potential damage, including loss of data, loss of data integrity and unauthorised access to data.

  • Digital Skills Career Progression: This unit provides learners with an understanding of the importance of digital skills in the workplace and how changes in employment have led to an increase in demand across a number of sectors. Learners will learn about the different types of job roles where digital skills are required, and the characteristics valued by employers to establish a successful career in todays digital economy. Learners will also identify their own career/progression goals and plan how they will develop their digital skills to meet their intended goals.
  • Website Design and Development: Learners will investigate website design and plan, design and create their own website in response to a client brief. They will test and refine the website against the client brief and review their own performance.
  • Digital Skills Project: Learners will develop the knowledge and skills to plan, develop and review a digital skills project.

  • Customer Service Provisions: You'll learn how to record and log customer support requirements, existing hardware and software resources, and identify customer needs in the IT industry.
  • Design Software: The aim of this unit is to introduce the learner to design application software. In order to achieve this, the learner will identify what designs are needed and then decide upon a design layout to meet those needs. The learner will also learn about styles and where to obtain the details that are required to create the designs. The learner will learn how to store and retrieve their designs correctly.
  • Presentation software: In this unit the learner will learn how to identify information that is required for a presentation. They will also learn to select differing layouts and styles depending on their audience. The learner will look at house styles and how to combine their information into their chosen format ready their Web Pitch presentation.
  • Creating an event computer program: This unit covers more advanced concepts of event-driven computer languages and their use to implement, refine and test computer programs.

  • Software design fundamentals: This unit has been designed to help a learner build an understanding of these topics: Core Programming, Object-Oriented Programming, General Software Development, Web Applications, Desktop Applications, and Databases.
  • Software testing: This unit will enable the learner to provide technical customer support and understand the processes involved in improving the way in which customers use networked ICT systems.
  • Website Development: This unit provides an understanding of web architecture, components and technologies. It also covers the development of a specification for a website and implementation of website elements.
  • Software Development fundamentals: This unit helps a learner build an understanding of Core Programming, Object-Oriented Programming, General Software Development, Web Applications, Desktop Applications, and Databases.
  • Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3: The unit focuses on using HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript to implement programming logic, define and use variables, perform looping and branching, develop user interfaces, capture and validate user input, store data, and create well-structured application.
  • Creating an object-oriented computer program: This unit covers more advanced concepts of procedural computer languages and their use to implement, refine and test computer programs.

All our courses have one or more mandatory units and a choice of additional units.

Course content is tailored for you (and your employer) and the list of units outlined on this page are a guide only. Units covered will also depend on your prior learning and credit requirement. If there is something specific that you are interested in learning, please discuss this with your tutor during induction.

During your appointment assessment, we will help you work out which course will be the most suitable for you based on your results, previous experiences and interests.

Yes, we are a recognised GCSE testing centre. If you don’t already have GCSE English and maths we’ll assess you to find out how we can help.
