Space in the Community Project Exhibition: Celebrating Learning, Innovation, and the Cosmos

For the past year, ELATT’s Space in the Community project, generously funded by the UK Space Agency, has been inspiring students and making STEM subjects more accessible and engaging. Through hands-on learning, expert talks, and film screenings, the project has created an exciting platform for young learners to explore space science, sustainability, and technology.

Now, we are thrilled to announce the culmination of this journey—the Space in the Community exhibition at RichMix, running from Wednesday, 26 February to Friday, 28 February 2025.

This exhibition will showcase the incredible work of our students, featuring interactive displays, student projects, multimedia content and STEM learning experiences throughout the programme. The exhibition will be open to the public after the launch event, providing an opportunity for visitors to explore the work and achievements of our students.

The Journey So Far: A Year of Discovery and Inspiration

Over the past year, students have engaged in STEM learning in London, participating in interactive space projects and activities designed to spark curiosity about space exploration and future careers in space science.

Film Screenings & Expert Talks: Through our Sci-Fi Film Club, students attended exclusive screenings of films like Gravity, The Martian, Moon, and First Man. Each screening was followed by discussions with leading experts, including:

  • Colin MacLeod (UK Civil Aviation Authority, space security expert)
  • Jo Coles (Polar Scientist, British Antarctic Survey)
  • Dr. Niamh Shaw (Space Reporter and Adventurer)
  • Daire Maria (Educator & LX Designer, specialising in AI for Education)
  • Chandrika Nath (Executive Director of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR))

These sessions helped students connect space exploration with real-world applications, from climate science to artificial intelligence.

Space Club & Hands-On Learning: Students participated in weekly Space Club sessions, where they explored different aspects of space science and technology through activities such as:

  • Mission patch design
  • Rocket physics and the Tsiolkovsky Rocket Equation
  • Space food tasting sessions
  • Programming robots, experimenting with film FX, and exploring CAD software
  • Developing a space-themed computer game integrating STEM concepts

Additionally, students gained insight into space careers and the financial aspects of space exploration, thanks to talks by UBS financial experts, focusing on private companies like SpaceX and satellite technology.

Ethics & Innovation in Space Exploration: Students debated the ethics of space resource utilisation, tackling critical issues such as asteroid mining, lunar exploration, and satellite deployment. These discussions encouraged critical thinking about space sustainability and the future of exploration.

Science Museum Visit: In December, students visited the Science Museum in London, where they explored space exhibits, interacted with cutting-edge augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology, and gained insights into the latest advancements in space science.

Extended Learning & Research

  • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ): Level 3 students have been conducting research on key issues in space exploration, preparing dissertations, and presenting findings to mentors from our partner UBS.
  • GCSE English & Astrobiology Project: Students worked on creative writing and art inspired by extra-terrestrial life and utopian/dystopian parallel universes.
  • Escape Room Challenge: A new space-themed escape room activity was introduced, along with challenge-based learning on designing space habitats and futuristic space technology concepts.

What’s Next: The Exhibition at Rich Mix

Student-Exclusive Film Screening:

  • Independence Day on Wednesday, 26 February, providing students with a thought-provoking perspective on global collaboration, space exploration, and technological advancements in the face of extraterrestrial challenges.

Guest Speaker – Dr. Ana Pereira-O’Callaghan, Head of Strategic Research Development and Graduate Studies, Babraham Institute

  • Ana Pereira-O’Callaghan will lead a discussion on space and sustainability, exploring the environmental implications of space exploration and its role in addressing global challenges.
