ELATT Reaches for the Stars with UBS's Help

ELATT students recently visited UBS at their London office to meet their mentors and discuss ideas for their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This unique collaboration is not only enhancing the students’ academic skills but also providing them with invaluable real-world insights from industry professionals.

What is the EPQ?

The EPQ is a nine-month-long project where students work on a topic of their choice, culminating in a 5,000-word dissertation or artefact, along with a presentation. It is equivalent to half an A level and can provide additional UCAS points, which help with university applications. The EPQ encourages skills such as independent learning, research, essay writing, and presentation.

Collaborating with Industry Experts

This year, ELATT students are working on real-world projects centred on the theme of “Space”. Topics range from Dark Matter and Space Debris to AI simulations of gravity and space exploration technologies. Through the guidance of UBS mentors, students are gaining exposure to the latest industry practices and learning how to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical, real-world contexts.

One student expressed:
“I’m a bit nervous about the amount of work I’ll have to do, but I think my mentors can really help.”

A mentor added:
“It’s great seeing how excited the students are. Their research topics are amazing!”

Mentor-Student Engagement in Action

Mentors are helping students hone their ideas, giving them research tips, and preparing them for their final presentations. This ongoing support is empowering the students to think beyond the classroom and develop essential skills for future careers in technology and other fields.

A teacher also shared their appreciation:
“Space and related topics have really captured our students’ imaginations. We are very grateful for the support from UBS mentors in guiding our students through these complex topics.”
